LG 34UC79G: 144Hz 34-inch FreeSync IPS Curved Gaming Monitor

The LG 34UC79G marks the company’s second entry into the high refresh rate arena. This is after the LG 24GM77 which is featured in our buyer’s guide. This gaming monitor is the only curved high refresh monitor that they offer so far. With a 3440 x 1440 resolution and 34 inch size this monitor boasts a pixel density of 110 pixels per inch. This statistic is far above many widescreen gaming monitor which opt for a lesser resolution like 2560 x 1080 which means they have a worse image quality. There’s one catch though: it will only run at a 144Hz rate on a 2560 x 1080 resolution.

The variable refresh rate is 50Hz to 144Hz and, since it’s equipped with AMD FreeSync technology, if you happen to dip below 50Hz you will be covered by Low Framerate Compensation. The end result? A gaming experience that is free of any screen tearing or stuttering. Choosing FreeSync over NVIDIA’s G-Sync allows the company to save on cost and as a result offer a lower price because no proprietary module is needed.

The LG 34UC79G is one of a handful of widescreen high refresh rate gaming monitors available out there and like those it also has a 21:9 aspect ratio. The 8-bit IPS panel offers a brightness of 300cd/m² which is a bit lower than the typical 350cd/m² strength we see. Its contrast ratio is 1000:1 and in keeping with the vast majority of monitors. LG advertises it as having a 5ms response time which is 1ms more than most IPS panels out there.

LG has packed a bunch of features for the 34UC79G. The monitor boasts a 1ms Motion Blur Reduction mode which should be especially handy in fast action games like first person shooters, likewise it has a crosshair feature that appears in the center of the screen, useful for when a game doesn’t have an in-game crosshair. Like the LG 24GM77, the LG 34UC79G has Dynamic Action Sync which minimizes input lag. Also handy is the Black Stabilizer feature that dynamically areas of the screen. Another useful feature is the ability to set custom preset modes for each individual game.

Aesthetically the display is stunning. The black and red stand gives it a premium feel, but in case it isn’t to your liking you can always swap it out for a custom VESA arm. Input options include two HDMI ports, a DisplayPort, and three USB 3.0 with one including USB Quick Charge technology.
