This is the standard that allows daisy-chaining multiple monitors. With an MST hub, you don’t need monitors with DisplayPort output support.

An MST hub is a great way to hook up multiple monitors. Like if you only have one of two DisplayPort outputs on your video card. Or, for instance, when you want to hook 4 or more monitors together.

AMD Eyefinity and Nvidia Surround – These two terms are brands for AMD’s and Nvidia’s multiple monitor technologies. You can find the two features in Nvidia Control Panel and Radeon Adrenalin app. They offer a relatively simple way to hook up and sync multiple monitors.

Freesync and G-Sync – Freesync and G-Sync are two adaptive sync technologies used today. They eliminate screen tearing when VSync is turned off in video games. The best dual monitor graphics card is easy to find, in case you need it for productivity reasons. Just get a cheap video card that match video inputs on your monitors. Whether that’s a dual HDMI video card, dual DisplayPort video card, or dual DVI video card.

Our recommendation is getting the ZOTAC GeForce GT 710. It’s cheap, supports up to 3 displays and will work just fine as long as you don’t game. You can find display adapters (in case your monitors don’t support video outputs present on these cards) for cheap in case you need them. This is the best video card for dual monitors for general usage.

In case you have integrated GPU, you can use video outputs found on your motherboard. Just download CPU-Z, go to the Mainboard tab, and see the model of your motherboard. Then just enter the name in Google and check how many video outputs your MoBo has. If it has two, you don’t even have to buy a separate video card for dual monitors.

In case you play video games, the choice is much harder. We will presume you use two 1080p displays. For that setup (3840×1080), we recommend the AMD RX 5700 XT. It’s cheaper than the competition. It offers great performance for the price, and will run any game at 60 FPS on the highest settings. Further, esports games will run even faster; expect well over 100 FPS in most titles.

The best model we could find is the XFX RX 5700 XT Raw II. The card is really affordable, compared to other RX 5700 XT models. And it has lots of positive reviews. Finally, the cooler is really powerful and the card is capable of modest overclocking.

The best video card for 3 monitors used for gaming has to be quite powerful. Even in the most basic 3 monitor setup (three 1080p units), the number of pixels (6,220,800) is getting dangerously close to the 4K resolution (8,847,360).

The minimum you need is the RTX 2080 Super. A 3 monitors graphics card that has our recommendation is the ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2080 Super. It is more expensive than other models. But, it offers an excellent cooling solution and can be overclocked.

The card features two DisplayPort and two HDMI ports. There’s also one USB-C port in case you own a VR headset. With this card, you will be able to run any game at 60 frames per second on highest details. Even in the monstrous 5760×1080 resolution.

Do note that in case you’re using 3 monitors that have 1440p or higher resolution, the only real choice for gaming on such high resolutions is two RTX 2080Ti cards in SLI. This also stands true for 4, 5, and 6 monitor setups.

Gaming on 4 1080p screens accounts for 8,294,400 pixels. That’s pretty much 4K territory. For this kind of high-end gaming, you’ll need the RTX 2080Ti. You can go with a 2080 Super but you’ll have to decrease details for a 60 frames-per-second experience. In that case, just pick the aforementioned ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2080 Super. But for uncompromised gaming, the best video card that supports 4 monitors is the RTX 2080Ti.

The PowerColor Red Dragon Radeon RX 570 is the best video card for a 5 monitor setup. The card itself features 5 video ports (3xDisplayPort, 1xHDMI, 1xDVI) and it officially supports up to 5 monitors in total. So, you are covered in case you have only five units.

The great thing is that you don’t need a DisplayPort MST hub. Only a couple of adapters depending on which monitors you use. Do note that, for the best experience, you’ll need native DisplayPort monitors.

With five monitors we already enter territory beyond 4K. And here, anything less than the RTX 2080Ti is not enough. But the problem here is that Nvidia states on the site that the card only supports up to 4 displays. The max number of displays that can be used for one seamless screen is 4. You can add more but those can only be auxiliary screens that display other content.

To add more monitors, you’ll need an additional graphics card. You can simply get a cheap video card, like the ZOTAC GeForce GT 710 we recommended for 2 and 3 monitor setups. You will lose a couple of PCIe lanes. But, if you get the x1 PCIe version of the card the performance loss will be next to zero.

If you want to hook up 5 monitors in a surround setup (one seamless desktop and gaming experience) you need two RTX 2080Ti in SLI mode. Do note that Nvidia supports up to 5 monitors in the surround setup. And that only works in SLI. As is the case with the previous setup, we recommend the Gigabyte AORUS GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Xtreme.

Best 6 Monitor Video Card

The RX 570 cards can work with 6 monitors, at least in theory. You should be able to run 6 monitors with the PowerColor Red Dragon Radeon RX 570. You’ll need one DisplayPort MST hub though.

In practice, it’s better to stick with a card that is designed to run 6 monitors. One of those cards is the VisionTek Radeon 7750. This card features 6 mini DisplayPort outputs. It should seamlessly work with 6 monitors.

In case you want a 5-monitor surround along with one additional screen, the only option is two RTX 2080Ti cards in the SLI setup. Again, our recommendation is the Gigabyte AORUS GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Xtreme.

    Can I put these awesome GC to an external box (eGPU) then connect my 3 monitors at the back of the GC ? The idea is to connect a NUC or a Laptop to the eGPU.

    Should we wait for RTX-30xx ?

    1. Hi Jean-Phillipe,

      You should be able to do that. I presume you have a Thunderbolt 3 port on your NUC or laptop. All you have to do is connect the NUC or laptop to the eGPU via Thunderbolt 3 and then hook up your monitors to the card sitting in eGPU case. Just make sure there are enough ports on the video card for all your monitors. Then, you can simply control the video output via Windows 10’s multimonitor feature.

      As for the second questions, it depends. If you have a card that works fine with current games, you should wait for the new generation of video cards. The whole “human malware” situation postponed the launch of the RTX 3xxx series. Further, AMD will also release their new series of cards in 2020, which should offer notable performance increase as well as provide hardware ray-tracing support.

      If you don’t have a video card right now, there’s no reason to wait because I recon we won’t get new cards before September 2020.
