In Risk of Rain there are 11 unlockable characters. 9 of these characters were available when the game first came and with the 1.2 patch two more characters, CHEF and Loader, were added. Every character has four unique skills as well as stat growths. Initially, only the Commando character is available to you when you start the game.
As you progress throughout the game you can unlock the rest of the characters by doing certain objectives and completing achievements. We made a complete list of all the Risk of Rain characters that you can unlock and how to get them.
Risk of Rain characters
Game difficulty: Drizzle+ How to unlock: Kill Magma Worm, Wandering Vagrant, and Colossus Skills:
Riot Shotgun: Fire a short range blast for 160% damage, hitting all enemies.
Shield Slam: Smash nearby enemies for 210% damage, knocking them back.
Protect and Serve: Take a defensive stance, blocking all damage from the front. Increases your attack speed, but slows your movement, renders you unable to jump, and locks the direction you are facing. This lasts until you de-activate the ability. The cooldown starts counting after you de-activate.
Crowd Control: Launch a stun grenade, stunning enemies in a huge radius for 250% damage. Can bounce at shallow angles.
Game difficulty: Drizzle+ How to unlock: Complete stage 3 Skills:
Blast: Fire a powerful slug for 150% damage.
Dynamite Toss: Toss an explosive in an arc for 230% damage.
Smokebomb: Turn invisible. After 3 seconds or after using another ability, surprise and stun enemies for 140% damage.
Lights Out: Take aim for a headshot, dealing 600% damage. If the ability kills an enemy, the Bandit’s cooldowns are all reset to 0.
Game difficulty: Rainstorm or Monsoon, latter cause more frequent drops How to unlock: Collect 15 Monster Logs Skills:
Strafe: Fire an arrow for 140% damage. You can shoot all skills while moving.
Laser Glaive: Throw a glaive that bounces to up to 4 enemies for 300% damage. Increases by 30% per bounce.
Blink: Teleport forward a small distance. (Distance increases movement speed)
Cluster Bomb: Fire an explosive arrow for 320% damage. The arrow drops bomblets that detonate for 6×80%.
Game difficulty: Drizzle+ How to unlock: Find Robot Janitor inside a storage crate located in area 2 of final level Skills:
HURT: Apply force to all combatants for 180% damage.
DRONE: Fire a drone for 190% damage while also healing yourself. Gain drones by killing enemies.
OVERCLOCK: Increase attack speed and stun chance by 30%. Increase duration by attacking enemies.
FORCED-REASSAMBLY: Apply great force to all combatants for 400% damage, knocking them in the air.
Game difficulty: Drizzle+ How to unlock: Buy 40 drones (fixing drone also counts) Skills:
Tri-nade: Launch three grenades for 3×80% damage.
Bounding Mine: Drop a trap that explodes for 300% damage. Hold up to 15.
Thermal Harpoons: Launch four heat-seeking harpoons for 4×250% damage.
Auto-Turret: Drop a turret that shoots for 3×100% damage for 30 seconds. Hold up to 2.
Game difficulty: Drizzle+ How to unlock: Go to bottom right of Magma Barracks and the kill the Direseeker monster in the tunnel Skills:
Crush: Crush nearby enemies for 140% damage.
Drill Charge: Charge up for 2 seconds. On release, dash through enemies for up to 600% damage. You cannot be hit while dashing.
Backblast: Blast backwards a small distance for 200% damage, stunning all enemies. You cannot be hit while dashing.
To The Stars: Jump into the air, hitting all enemies below for 3×180% total. Nothing can stop the quest against the anti-spirals.
Game difficulty: Drizzle+ How to unlock: Beat game for first time (single player or co-op) Skills:
Snipe / Reload: Shoot an enemy for 250% damage. Reactivate the ability to reload your weapon, granting bonus damage if timed correctly. Reload lets you reload after using Sniper or Steady Aim.
Steady Aim: Carefully take aim, increasing the damage the longer the button is held down. On release, fire a bullet for up to 2000% damage.
Military Training: Backflip a large distance. You cannot be hit while rolling.
Spotter: SCAN / RETURN: Send your Spotter to analyze the most dangerous enemy, increasing critical strike chance against it by 100%. Reload calls your SPOTTER back.
