A gritty life filled with difficult choices, ones that often impact the lives of many individuals. Violence and mayhem were the only company that mafia bosses usually had, and there are few games out there that capture the essence of that as well as the Mafia series. The Mafia series was developed by 2K Games and features storylines following multiple protagonists, from people that get involved with the mafia by chance to integrated members going about their business. The games are notoriously popular for being gritty and well-made, so our job today is to present you with the latest Mafia statistics for your curiosity. The games are quite expansive so you can be sure that there is a lot of information to process. If by the end of this, you have any other questions regarding the broader aspects of the gaming industry, we can tell you exactly how big the gaming industry is.

Mafia key stats

This section is going to take a look at some of the most basic Mafia information, going from total sales and revenue to news postings and updates on how some of the games performed in the competitive gaming industry market. The Mafia series has been around for a long time so you can expect a decent amount of information, some of which you have surely not heard about.

The Mafia series has sold over 14 million units.

  • Mafia sold 404,000 copies on Steam.
  • Mafia: Definitive Edition sold 1.6 million copies on Steam.
  • Mafia II sold 3.2 million copies on Steam.
  • Mafia II: Definitive Edition sold 535,000 copies on Steam.
  • Mafia III sold 7 million copies.
  • Mafia III: Definitive Edition sold 1.3 million copies on Steam.

Right off the bat, we can see that the Mafia series has some sizeable differences in total copies sold across all of the games, with Mafia III being the most popular game, at least when Steam is concerned. There are some conflicting opinions about which Mafia game is the best, but if you’re looking at the numbers exclusively, you’ll see that Mafia III performed the best.

The Mafia series has generated over $138.4 million on Steam.

  • Mafia made $3.9 million.
  • Mafia: Definitive Edition made $24.6 million.
  • Mafia II made $54.1 million.
  • Mafia II: Definitive Edition made $10.2 million.
  • Mafia III: Definitive Edition made $45.6 million.

This number for such a popular series seems out of place, and that is because it is. Take-Two has never published a complete overview of the revenue that the games have generated individually, which makes finding accurate information quite difficult. Nevertheless, this figure is good for estimating the general success of the games but should be taken with a grain of salt.

  • The game was confirmed to be in development in August 2022.

  • Hangar 13 went through significant layoffs since Mafia 3 was released in 2016.
  • Take-Two canceled an unannounced $53 million game by Hangar 13. in November 2021.

This is something that many fans of the Mafia series have been looking forward to, and for all the right reasons. Mafia IV is officially in development, and we can surely assume that it is going to take the mistakes of the previous games and use them as stepping stones for improving the games to the fullest. We can’t wait to see the updates for the game in the following years, and you can be sure that we’ll update this section with any new information we find.

Mafia III was 2K’s fastest-selling game in 2016.

(Source: Polygon, GameRant)

  • The game shipped 4.5 million copies in its first week.
  • Shipped means copies sent to retailers, not to actual players.
  • Mafia III’s main competitor was Borderlands 2, which shipped more than 10 million copies.
  • When the game first launched, it was met with mixed reviews but was praised in the end for its storyline.

This is another testament to the success and popularity of Mafia III being the best Mafia game out there. It was the fastest-selling 2K Games title by 2016, and it was on track to become the highest-selling 2K Games game ever, but it never managed to pass Borderlands 2 for that spot.

Mafia II turned out to be profitable for 2K Games.

(Source: Engadget, GameDeveloper)

  • Michael Pachter, a Wedbush analyst stated that Mafia II would never be profitable.
  • Take-Two responded to this statement and said that he was wrong.
  • They were very proud of the game following an investor call reporting on positive third-quarter financial results in 2010.
  • While they were unable to provide exact numbers for sales and profit, Take-Two still claimed that Mafia II ended up being profitable in the end.

Despite initial assumptions that the slow start of Mafia II would mean that the game would not be profitable, the situation turned around and Mafia II turned out to be a success that Take-Two could be proud of. The statements of Michael Pachter were snuffed out as false information, and the reputation of Mafia II was saved!

  • Hardware sales dipped by 20% to $215.2 million.
  • Accessory sales fell by 24%, to $121 million.

These are just some general statistics for the gaming industry and the sales of its branches, wherein Mafia was a major contributor to the total profits within the gaming industry and its success in October 2016. It’s a major thing to see how successful the third game was at that point since improved the performance of a global industry within a few months.
