The reason that so many gamers, from a variety of generations, tend to flock to fantasy RPG games is that they get to be immersed in an epic story that they can control with their own hands, making every experience a unique one. One of, if not the best RPG series in the history of gaming is Dragon Age, a media franchise centered around the world of Thedas, which is an acronym for The Dragon Age Setting. There have been eight Dragon Age games in the series and they have had varying gameplay dynamics between them, but they have all maintained the same level of interest and appeal in their fanbases. To honor the Dragon Age series and everything it has brought to gaming, we will display some Dragon Age statistics for you to check out and gain a new, nerdy perspective on the series. Likewise, if you want to learn more about how much the video game industry is worth, we’ve got you covered!

Dragon Age key stats

Like all good things, we’re going to start from the basics and get into the details as they are available. First, we will look at how many Dragon Age games have been sold in total, as well as their generated revenue. Other than that, you can expect relevant stats and news postings about the games and the series as a whole.

The Dragon Age series has sold over 11.2 million units.

(Source: VG Chartz)

  • Dragon Age: Origins sold 3.2 million units.
  • Dragon Age II sold 2 million units.
  • Dragon Age: Inquisition sold 6 million units.

From the first line of statistics, we can see that the series has accumulated a lot of sales for all three of the games, at least as far as the documentation can attest, although the number might be even higher. Nevertheless, we can see that Inquisition was the most successful Dragon Age game, shipping over 6 million units and likely many more in the years since its release.

The Dragon Age series has grossed $32.4 million on Steam.

(Source: VG Insights)

  • Dragon Age: Origins grossed $6.7 million.
  • Dragon Age: Origins – Ultimate Edition grossed $16.2 million.
  • Dragon Age II grossed $1.4 million.
  • Dragon Age Inquisition grossed $8.1 million.

BioWare does not post the financial achievement of its games too often, so all we can rely on here is the information from the Steam releases of the games, which will give us a ballpark estimate of the amount of money generated on this platform. Contrary to what you might expect, Inquisition was not the most successful Steam-released Dragon Age game. That position belongs to the Digital Deluxe Edition of Dragon Age: Origins.

72.2% of Dragon Age 2 players chose the female Hawke over the male one.

(Source: Behance)

  • 32.2% of players used Hawke’s default face.
  • 44.3% of players chose the Mage class.
  • 41.7% of players chose the Rogue class.
  • 26.1% of players chose Varric for their party.
  • 25.2% of players chose Fenris for their party.
  • 13% of players chose Anders for their party.
  • 10.4% of players chose Isabela for their party.
  • 7.8% of players chose Aveline for their party.
  • 7% of players chose Merrill for their party.
  • 5.2% of players chose Bethany for their party.
  • 3.5% of players chose Carver for their party.
  • 1.7% of players chose Sebastian for their party.
  • 83.8% of players imported their save from Dragon Age: Origins.
  • 82.8% of players expressed the intent to get Dragon Age III.
  • 72.6% of players played for more than 50 hours.
  • 85.5% of players chose the Mages as opposed to the Templars.

Now for some random statistics from Dragon Age II where we can see that the female version of Hawke is much more popular than the male counterpart, and importing saves was quite a popular practice, for the sake of immersion.

Dragon Age: Dreadwolf won’t be out until April 2024.

(Source: Eurogamer, TheGamer)

  • EA revealed this information following an earnings report noting net bookings of $1.95 billion.
  • Dreadwolf has been in development since 2017.
  • The initial release date predictions for Dreadwolf were supposed to land in late 2023.
  • Some have stated that this is actually good news as the delayed release date could mean that BioWare might climb into a better spotlight, in terms of relevance.

New game releases are all the rage for dedicated fans of series that have been there since day one. Take the popularity of the Dead Space remake, for example. The game was first released in 2008 and its 2023 remake was among the top games during its release period. The same can be expected of Dragon Age: Dreadwolf… whenever it comes out, that is. The good news is that delays for remakes usually mean that the team working on them is trying to perfect everything, and that bodes well for Dragon Age.

Dragon Age: Origins topped the Steam charts in 2009.

(Source: VG247)

  • The first two spots were taken by two versions of Dragon Age — Origins and Origins Digital Deluxe Edition.
  • The game beat very popular titles like Left 4 Dead 2, Borderlands, Modern Warfare 2, etc.

Because the games have a gameplay dynamic that appeals to a wide variety of games and fantasy enthusiasts, it is no wonder that the original Dragon Age performed so well on the sales charts. Just like the original, subsequent games enjoyed similar success in the following years.

The majority of Dragon Age: Origins players played the game on PC.

(Source: Reddit)

  • The majority of players preferred to play the game on Normal difficulty, the second-highest being Easy.
  • Alistair was the most popular companion.
  • 34% of female players chose to romance one person, with 28% of male players choosing the same option.
  • 1% of players decided to romance no one.
  • Most female players chose to romance Alistair, while most players chose to romance Morrigan.

This and the following stats, up to the Twitch statistics are just general overviews of community choices made in a Reddit poll conducted some years ago. This serves to provide a perspective on the three games and what players tend to do in them.

51% of Dragon Age II players played the game on Normal difficulty.

(Source: Reddit)

  • 24% of players chose Casual difficulty.
  • 15% of players chose Hard difficulty.
  • 9% of players chose Nightmare difficulty.
  • The most popular background for Hawke was as a female mage.
  • 73% of players played the game on PC.
  • 16% of players played the game on Xbox 360.
  • 13% of players played the game on PS3.
  • Varric was the most popular companion, followed by Isabela.

For Dragon Age II, the most notable stat is that the majority of players played the game on PC.

The most popular inquisitor background in Dragon Age: Inquisition was Dalish Elf Mage.

(Source: Reddit)

  • 45% of players chose to play on Normal difficulty.
  • 21% of players chose to play on Casual difficulty.
  • 19% of players chose to play on Hard difficulty.
  • 16% of players chose to play on Nightmare difficulty.
  • 64% of players played the game on PC.
  • 20% of players played the game on PS4.
  • 8% of players played the game on Xbox One.
  • 5% of players played the game on Xbox 360.
  • 4% of players played the game on PS4.

What’s interesting here is the number of people who chose Normal difficulty in Dragon Age: Inquisition is less than half, meaning other difficulties were more chosen than in previous games. This emphasizes Casual difficulty, so some players prefer a storytelling approach to the game.

The Dragon Age series has had over 3.2 million hours watched across their best years on Twitch.

(Source: SullyGnome)

  • Dragon Age: Origins had 1.34 million hours watched in 2022.
  • The game had 83,344 broadcasting hours.
  • It had 153 viewers on average.
  • Its peak viewer count was 17,578.
  • Dragon Age II had 435,269 hours watched in 2020.
  • The game had 19,702 broadcasting hours.
  • It had 49 viewers on average.
  • Its peak viewer count was 6,897.
  • Dragon Age: Inquisition had 1.42 million hours watched in 2022.
  • The game had 117,003 broadcasting hours.
  • It had 162 viewers on average.
  • Its peak viewer count was 14,700.

And finally, we have some general Twitch statistics for all of the Dragon Age games and how many hours watched they gathered over their most successful years. While they did not gather as many hours watched as some more popular, AAA games, that does not mean that these games are anything less than amazing and a great source of entertainment for those who do not want to get into them but just want to watch.

To sum up

Okay, that would be all we have to say about the Dragon Age series and all of the wonder it has brought to the gaming community and to gaming in general. As we can see, there are a lot of choices that go into playing one of these games, and the community is pretty evenly distributed through their choices, highlighting the gameplay variety and everything you can do. That’s all from us, we sincerely hope that you have enjoyed what we’ve had to present here and that you can appreciate this legendary series even more than before!
