Disco Elysium is an RPG developed by ZA/UM which places you in the fictional district of Martinaise, in the role of a detective who has to investigate a lynching. From there, you go on an adventure filled with deception, mature themes, and much more. It’s one of the best RPGs of recent years, so let’s look at how popular it is in numbers.

Disco Elysium revenue

Disco Elysium made a €6.7 million profit in its first six months

  • In the 16 months before release, ZA/UM had made a loss of €617,246.

The game’s popularity was the driving force behind ZA/UM’s success, turning a loss-making studio into a profitable one within six months of launch.

ZA/UM’s majority stake was bought with €4.8 million of the studio’s own money, a lawsuit alleged

  • In November 2022, Disco Elysium producer Kaur Kender sued, alleging that Estonian businessman Ilmar Kompus had bought a story draft and four sketches for the sequel, sold them back to ZA/UM for €4.8 million and used the money to take a majority stake, Game World Observer reported.
  • Kender withdrew the suit in December 2022, after Kompus returned the €4.8 million to ZA/UM.
  • Lead designer Robert Kurvitz, art director Aleksander Rostov and writer Helen Hindpere had left the studio “involuntarily” at the end of 2021.
  • In March 2023, ZA/UM said Kurvitz and Rostov had dropped their unfair dismissal claims. The pair said they would keep pursuing legal action.

This is the biggest controversy surrounding the game by far. Kurvitz and Rostov built Disco Elysium from a world they had been writing for years, and losing the studio behind it was a hard blow for its fans.

  • It takes more than 60 hours of continuous play to finish if you’re a reasonably completionist player, Robert Kurvitz said before launch in September 2019, PC Gamer reported.
  • It takes 90 hours if you savour every detail.
  • If you rush through it, it takes about 30 hours.
  • It has about 100 tasks, about 100 inventory items and 24 skills, and took 5 years to make.

Completionists will find that Disco Elysium packs a ton of content and can be hard to 100%, but casual players can still enjoy it without that pressure.
