Unity Technologies is the world’s most widely used game engine by release volume — powering 51% of all Steam game releases in 2024. Nearly 5 million developers engaged with Unity in 2025. Annual revenue reached $1.849 billion in FY2025, up 2% from $1.813 billion in FY2024, recovering from the 2023 collapse caused by the Runtime Fee crisis. The Runtime Fee was cancelled in September 2024 following one of the largest developer revolts in gaming industry history. Developer count is growing again: up 1.2% year-on-year in 2025. Unity remains the dominant engine by game count but faces structural pressure from Unreal Engine 5 at the high-revenue end of the market.

Unity key statistics

  • 30% — developers naming Unity as their primary engine (2026 developer survey — down from majority in prior years).
  • ~70% — Unity’s share of top-grossing mobile games (estimate).
  • Runtime Fee: cancelled September 12, 2024.

Unity revenue

Unity generated $1.849 billion in FY2025 — recovering from the Runtime Fee collapse

Unity reports two revenue segments: Create Solutions (engine subscriptions, professional services) and Grow Solutions (advertising/monetisation via ironSource/Unity Ads).

Fiscal YearTotal RevenueYoY ChangeNotes
2022~$1.39 billion+25%Pre-crisis peak growth
2023$2.187 billion+58%Includes ironSource merger revenue
2024$1.813 billion-17%Runtime Fee fallout + portfolio reset
2025$1.849 billion+2%Stabilisation; returning to growth

FY2025 segment breakdown:

  • Create Solutions (engine): $165 million Q4 2025 (+8% YoY).
  • Grow Solutions (advertising): $338 million Q4 2025 (+11% YoY).
  • Adjusted EBITDA FY2025: $408.8 million (22% margin) — up from $389.8 million in FY2024.
  • Comprehensive loss FY2025: $392.3 million — Unity has not achieved GAAP profitability.

The revenue story: Unity’s 2023 revenue of $2.187 billion included ironSource’s advertising business acquired in 2022. The Runtime Fee announcement in September 2023 and subsequent trust collapse caused a “portfolio reset” — Unity divested non-core assets and restructured — resulting in the 2024 revenue decline. FY2025’s $1.849 billion represents stabilisation, not full recovery to 2023 levels.

Developer count and market share

Nearly 5 million developers used Unity in 2025 — 51% of all Steam releases

Developer count:

  • ~5 million developers engaged with Unity Engine and ecosystem in 2025 (Unity’s own 2026 Gaming Development Report — drawn from “nearly five million developers” who engaged with Unity in 2025).
  • Developer count growth: +1.2% year-on-year in 2025 — modest but positive, signalling stabilisation post-Runtime Fee.

Steam market share (2025):

  • 51% of all Steam game releases in 2024 used Unity — still the majority by game count.
  • 26% of Steam units sold in 2024 — lower than release share because high-volume AAA games increasingly use Unreal.

Unity’s share of Steam releases over time:

YearUnity Share of Steam ReleasesUnity Share of Steam Units Sold
2020~58%25%
2021~56%27%
2022~58%27%
2023~42%27%
2024~51%26%

The gap between 51% of releases and 26% of units sold is the central dynamic of Unity’s market position: Unity dominates game count but not game revenue. Small indie projects overwhelmingly use Unity; the biggest commercial titles increasingly use Unreal Engine 5.

2026 developer survey (primary engine):

  • Unreal Engine: 42% (first time leading)
  • Unity: 30%
  • This represents a structural shift in developer preference at studios large enough to have a choice.

Mobile dominance:

  • Unity powers approximately 70% of top-grossing mobile games (estimate).
  • Mobile remains Unity’s strongest market — its dominance there is largely unchallenged by Unreal Engine.

The Runtime Fee crisis

September 2023: the most damaging self-inflicted crisis in game engine history

September 12, 2023: Unity announced a Runtime Fee — a charge per game install above certain thresholds ($0.20 per install after 200,000 installs for Pro subscribers). The announcement was retroactive to existing games, meaning developers who had already shipped could face unexpected new costs.

Developer reaction: Immediate and severe.

  • Studios publicly announced plans to switch to Unreal Engine, Godot, or GameMaker.
  • Godot’s GitHub repository received hundreds of thousands of new stars within days.
  • Major developers including Massive Monster (Cult of the Lamb), Garry Newman (Garry’s Mod), and dozens of studio heads publicly condemned the decision.
  • Unity’s CEO John Riccitiello stepped down on October 9, 2023 — less than four weeks after the announcement.

Partial reversal (September 2023): Unity revised the fee structure — changed from per-activation to per-install, with higher thresholds — but did not cancel the fee.

Full cancellation (September 12, 2024): Exactly one year after the original announcement, Unity officially cancelled the Runtime Fee entirely (Unity blog, unity.com/blog/unity-is-canceling-the-runtime-fee). Unity Pro subscription price was raised by 8% to $2,200/year as partial compensation for lost Runtime Fee revenue.

Financial impact: Unity FY2024 revenue fell 17% from $2.187B to $1.813B. The Runtime Fee crisis was the primary cause — developers’ reduced confidence in Unity led to a “portfolio reset” that cost the company hundreds of millions in revenue.

No runtime fee: Following the September 2024 cancellation, Unity charges no per-install or per-download fee at any tier. Revenue-based royalties were never part of Unity’s model (unlike Unreal Engine’s 5% royalty).

Unity by genre and platform

Unity dominates mobile and indie; Unreal dominates AAA and shooters

By game size (Steam, units sold 2024):

  • Tiny games (under 1K units): 50% Unity vs 23% Unreal.
  • Small games (1K–100K units): 48% Unity vs 27% Unreal.
  • Medium games (100K–1M units): 35% Unity vs 32% Unreal (near-equal).
  • Large games (1M+ units): 22% Unity vs 31% Unreal — Unreal leads.

Unity’s share declines as game size grows. Its core strength is the indie and small-team segment where ease of use and rapid iteration outweigh Unreal’s rendering capabilities.

Mobile: Unity powers approximately 70% of top-grossing mobile titles — its most dominant market. Unreal Engine has minimal mobile presence by comparison. Candy Crush (Unity), PUBG Mobile (Unreal) illustrates the split.

Notable games built on Unity

  • Pokémon GO — Niantic / The Pokémon Company — 691M installs lifetime.
  • Genshin Impact — MiHoYo — $6.3B+ lifetime mobile revenue.
  • Among Us — Innersloth — 500M+ downloads.
