9 Best Motherboards for Ryzen 9 3900XT

AMD recently introduced a new range of upgraded Ryzen 3000 CPUs. They should keep the latest Intel CPUs at bay until the arrival of the Ryzen 4000 series of processors. The new CPUs offer a modest increase in clock speeds. Faster clocks transform into modest performance gains in productivity workloads.

After we covered the best motherboards for the Ryzen 5 3600XT and Ryzen 7 3800XT the time has come to present the best boards for the flagship model of the bunch, the Ryzen 9 3900XT. In this article, you’ll find only B550 and X570 motherboards.

As we’ve already noted, B450 boards are increasingly hard to find. And those selling for their original price are low-end models with poor VRMs. Below, you’ll find a selection of best budget, mid-range, and high-end boards that should be perfect choices to pair up with the 3900XT CPU.

You’ll notice that the budget range here is the mid-range in previous articles. The reason is simple – if you plan on getting the 3900XT you probably need a board that doesn’t only offer great VRM but also a slew of additional features. This is why we’ve picked the Gigabyte X570 Aorus Pro WiFi and the Gigabyte B550 Aorus Pro AC as budget options.

They offer excellent VRMs. They also have a nice suite of features. Features such as multiple M.2 slots with heatsinks. Lots of USB 3.2 ports on the rear panel, along with excellent audio sections and support for fast memory. The B550 model supports up to 5200MHz DDR4 memory while the X570 model supports 4400MHz DDR4 memory. You get six SATA III ports and two M.2 slots on both boards. But, only the X570 model comes with two PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots. The B550 board has only one PCIe 4.0 M.2 slot. The other one is PCIe 3.0.

Next, there are three PCIe x16 slots on both boards. The B550 has one slot running at x16, the second at x4, and third at x2. This model doesn’t support SLI or Crossfire. The X570 model, on the other hand, has support for both SLI and Crossfire with one slot working at x8 with the second and third working at x8 and x4, respectively.

We’ve already mentioned that both boards come with pretty solid audio sections powered by the Realtek ALC1220-VB audio coded. They also feature Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5 connectivity, in the case of the X570 model. The B550 board has a Wi-Fi 5 wireless card along with support for Bluetooth 4.2. You have 2.5Gb LAN on the B550 model while the X570 board has regular gigabit LAN port. You can find debug LEDs on both models, while the BIOS flashback button is present only on the B550 model.

The mid-range (or in this case, budget) market includes a ton of quality boards so you’ll easily find an alternative to these two models. Firstly, you have two excellent boards from ASUS: the ROG Strix B550-F Gaming and the X570 TUF Gaming Plus. Next, there’s the excellent MSI X570 Tomahawk as well as the B550 Tomahawk. Finally, there’s the MSI B550 Gaming Edge.

Expansion ports include three PCIe slots (one is x16, second is x8, and the third works at x4 mode) along with two PCIe x1 slots. X570 ACE supports both Nvidia SLI and AMD Crossfire. Connectivity-wise, you get 2.5Gb + 1Gb LAN ports along with Wi-Fi 6 chip that also comes with Bluetooth 5.1

The rear panel hosts six USB 3.2 ports, four USB 2.0 ports, BIOC flashback, and clear CMOS buttons, as well as a selection of audio jacks. Overclocking is this board’s specialty so it’s normal for it to offer advanced OC features. Here you have debug LEDs, POST code, as well as power and reset buttons found on the board. The MSI X570 ACE is a great board. The only thing we don’t like about it is its aggressive design.

When it comes to alternatives, there’s plenty. If you want a capable board but don’t want to pay a premium for the X570 chipset, check out the Gigabyte B550 Aorus Master and ASUS ROG Strix B550-F Gaming. If you want an alternative when it comes to design and more SATA III ports, get the ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Hero X570. That one has eight SATA III ports in total. And if you want the best of the best, read on.

Ok, if you want the absolute best board there is for Ryzen processors, get the MSI X570 MEG Godlike. This board has all the features you’ll ever need and then some. An overkill VRM that could easily be used for Threadripper CPUs. Support for 5000MHz DDR4 memory. Triple M.2 slots along with a bundled card that includes two additional M.2 slots along with four SATA III ports.

Three PCIe x16 slots with support for SLI and Crossfire along with one PCIe x1 slot. Dual Gigabit LAN made of 1Gb LAN port and 2.5Gb LAN port. You also get an add-on card with the board that includes a 10 Gb LAN port. The board also boasts Wi-Fi 6 chip that includes Bluetooth 5.1.

The good thing is that the wireless card is installed into a dedicated M.2 slot so you can replace the chip with a better one in the future. The audio section contains two Realtek ALC1220 Codecs along with ESS E9018 DAC for crystal clear audio. You can use high-end Hi-Fi headphones with the MEG X570 Godlike thanks to the 6.3mm headphone jack found on the rear panel.

The rear panel also includes six USB 3.2 ports, one USB-C port, a selection of audio jacks, a BIOS flashback button, and a clear CMOS button. OC features continue with debug LEDs, and a small display that replaces the POST code. This is the best X570 board because it isn’t the most expensive one while offering everything found in other premium X570 boards. We would only like to see 10Gb LAN port on the rear panel and not on the add-on card but oh well.

Few alternatives include the ASUS ROG X570 Crosshair VIII Formula that comes with 12 USB 3.2 ports and the GIGABYTE X570 AORUS Xtreme that offers 10Gb LAN port on the rear panel.

Best mATX Motherboard for Ryzen 9 3900XT

MSI MAG B550M Mortar Wi-Fi
ChipsetAMD B550
Memory4 × DDR4 DIMM, max. 128 GB

2 × USB 2.0
1 × 2.5G LAN
2 × SMA
1 × Optical S/PDIF OUT
5 × audio jacks
Wi-FiYes

The MSI B550M Mortar isn’t the best of the best mATX board. It’s a shame that ASUS didn’t create a B550 or X570 variant of the excellent ROG Strix Z490-G Gaming board that’s the best mATX board for 10th gen Intel CPUs. Nevertheless, the MSI B550M Mortar can run overclocked 3900X so we are sure it will run the 3900 XT with zero issues.

It doesn’t even need high airflow inside the case because it has excellent VRM that is fully ready for any Ryzen CPU. Other features are pretty good for an mATX card. You have dual M.2 slots and support for 4400MHz DDR4 memory. You also get two PCIe x16 slots but the second one is working at x4. Despite this, the MSI B550M Mortar supports Crossfire. The board also includes two PCIe x1 slots.

This motherboard includes Wi-Fi 6 along with Bluetooth 5.1. Again, the Wi-Fi chip is preinstalled on the M.2 slot on the board so you can replace it down the line. Wired connectivity includes a 2.5Gbps LAN port. The rear panel isn’t the richest on the market, but it’s pretty solid. There are four USB 3.2 ports, along with two USB 2.0 ports and the selection of audio jacks.

When talking about audio, this board features Realtek ALC1200 Codec found on many mid-range models. Oh yeah, you also get six SATA III ports. If you need an alternative there’s the ASUS TUF Gaming B550M-Plus. That’s a solid board but it has a weak VRM. Make sure to have direct airflow over the VRM section if you plan on using that board with the 3900XT.

Best Mini-ITX Motherboard for Ryzen 9 3900XT

Gigabyte B550I Aorus Pro AX
ChipsetAMD B550
Memory2 × DDR4 DIMM, max. 64 GB

1 × USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C
1 × USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A
4 × USB 3.2 Gen 1
1 × LAN
2 × SMA
3 × audio jack
Wi-FiYes

We are glad that there are three excellent and relatively affordable Mini-ITX boards on the market that can host any Ryzen CPU. Due to the Mini-ITX form factor constraints, the lack of multiple PCIe M.2 slots and multiple PCIe 4.0 x16 slots on the B550 chipset is irrelevant when talking about SFF motherboards.

Two of these three boards can run the Ryzen 9 3950X without issues and since the Gigabyte model features pretty much the same VRM as the MSI and ASUS boards, we are sure that the Gigabyte B550 Mini-ITX board won’t have issues running the 3900XT.

MSI MPG B550I Gaming Edge WiFi
ChipsetAMD B550
Memory2 × DDR4 DIMM, max. 64 GB
Storage2 × M.2, 4 × SATAIII
Multi GPU SupportNone
Expansion Slots1 × PCIe x16
Back Panel Ports1 × BIOS Flashback Button
1 × PS/2
1 × HDMI
1 × USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C
1 × USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A
2 × USB 3.2 Gen 1
2 × USB 2.0
1 × LAN
2 × SMA
1 × Optical S/PDIF
5 × audio jack
Wi-FiYes

Spec-wise all three models are pretty similar. They all have dual M.2 slots (only one is PCIe 4.0) along with a single PCIe 4.0 x16 slot and support for fast memory (5100MHz on the ASUS model, 4600 on the MSI, and 5300 on the Gigabyte model). You also get four SATA III ports on all three boards, along with 2.5Gb LAN ports.

ASUS ROG Strix B550-I Gaming
ChipsetAMD B550
Memory2 × DDR4 DIMM, max. 64 GB
Storage2 × M.2, 4 × SATAIII
Multi GPU SupportNone
Expansion Slots1 × PCIe x16
Back Panel Ports1 × BIOS FlashBack Button
1 × DisplayPort
1 × HDMI
1 × USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C
3 × USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A
2 × USB 2.0
1 × 2.5G LAN
2 × SMA
3 × audio jack
Wi-FiYes

Another nice thing is that all three models have Wi-Fi 6 chips along with Bluetooth 5 connectivity. The only noticeable advantage one of these boards has over the other two is that the Gigabyte model has six USB 3.2 ports while ASUS and MSI models come with four USB 3.2 ports.

Finally, if you want a quality X570 motherboard, get the ASUS ROG Strix X570-I Gaming. This is the best Mini-ITX X570 board but it’s also pricier than the other two choices. Those two choices are the Gigabyte X570 I AORUS Pro and the ASRock X570 Phantom Gaming.

Why Pick the Ryzen 3900XT?

First of all, you’ll get the best CPU for productivity tasks that doesn’t cost a fortune. The only better options are the Ryzen 9 3950X and Threadripper CPUs. Now, the question just how faster the 3900XT is than the regular 3900X is a bit trickier. According to reports, new CPUs bring about a five percent increase in performance.

Those improvements probably won’t be visible in games but they will affect productivity-related workloads. So, the 3900XT should be up to five percent faster than the 3900X. It’ll be the fastest CPU for productivity under $500 but the question is whether the 3900XT is worth its price. Remember that the 3900X had a recent price reduction and that the 3900XT won’t come with a box cooler.

In the end, you’ll pay a premium for a five percent faster CPU along with the extra investment in a quality aftermarket cooler. Personally, we would rather pick the 3900X but if you really want the extra performance feel free to get the 3900XT.
