Action adventure games often have excellent settings that make their story immersive and interesting, and one of the most fun and creative games you can play is Dishonored. Dishonored first came out in 2012 and it was developed by Arkane Studios. The game is set in a fictional town called Dunwall and concerns Corvo Attano, a protector who gets framed for assassinating a royal and is forced to go on the run, acquiring mystical powers in the process. The second game has a similar premise but is set further in the future. The Dishonored series has been around for over a decade and features fan-favorite games which many players come back to frequently. To celebrate what Dishonored has achieved over the years, we will be presenting some Dishonored statistics and facts! We hope you enjoy the content presented here and if you’re hungry for more information, we have a lot of facts on how big the gaming industry is, as well.

Dishonored key stats

This first section is meant to represent a general overview of the Dishonored series going from total sales across both games to total revenue and wherever other information we can find on the topic. Something to keep in mind for the Dishonored series is that, while it is fairly popular, it is one of those series that doesn’t have much news surrounding it unless a big release is in the works, so the information that we can present here might seem a bit limited.

The Dishonored series has sold 8 million copies.

(Source: VG Chartz, VG Insights)

  • Dishonored has sold 5.8 million copies.
  • Dishonored 2 has sold 2.2 million copies.

In this first line of stats, we can see that the Dishonored series has not sold as many copies as other series in the gaming industry, but that does not diminish its value as a fantastic experience. The sales for the games are a bit hazy since Bethesda has not provided us with any concrete numbers, so this will have to do. It’s also a good ballpark for the series in general since the numbers are fairly accurate.

Dishonored sold exceedingly better than expected in 2012.

  • Excellent Dishonored sales cemented it as a new franchise for Bethesda.
  • It fell into the same ranks as Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, and DOOM.
  • Hines said in an interview that the sales of Dishonored were especially impressive considering that it was against other heavy-hitting titles.
  • It only fell behind FIFA 13 but was the best new IP launch in 2012.

This was definitely the pinnacle for the Dishonored series as the first game performed amazingly well throughout its lifespan. Other games came after it, but they did not perform as well, causing the series to falter for the time being until something major occurs down the road. Nevertheless, Dishonored’s launch is the perfect example of how popular gaming franchises come to be.

Dishonored has grossed $50.1 million on Steam.

(Source: VG Insights)

  • The game had approximately 500 active players at the time of writing.
  • 97.6% of its Steam reviews are positive.
  • The average number of hours a player invests in the game is 42.4 hours.
  • The median play time is 25.6 hours.

Right off the bat for this section, we can see that Dishonored has not had many players recently about the time of writing, and that is because it’s the type of game that offers an incredible experience the first time you play it, but is not the type of game to garner constant attention.

Dishonored 2 has grossed $70.9 million on Steam.

(Source: VG Insights)

  • The game had approximately 800 active players at the time of writing.
  • 88.4% of its Steam reviews are positive.
  • The average number of hours a player invests in the game is 45.2 hours.
  • The median play time is 29.8 hours.

When it comes to Dishonored 2, we can see that it has more average daily players compared to the first game, but that is likely because people tend to gravitate more toward new releases with fancy new graphics and more content. The price shift for new games is apparent since Dishonored 2 sold fewer copies than the original game but made more revenue.

Dishonored 2 had 38% weaker launch sales than Dishonored.

(Source: Eurogamer)

  • These sales are based on both of the games’ performance on the UK charts following their releases.
  • There might be some discrepancies in the accuracy of this information because of digital sales.
  • Dishonored 2 was beaten in sales by Battlefield 1, FIFA 17, and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.
  • Dishonored 2 beat Skyrim Special Edition, Forza Horizon 3, and Overwatch in sales.

This is where Dishonored 2 failed to meet expectations and ultimately set the series on a course for an indefinite hiatus, which we will discuss further. Launch issues for games occur all the time, be it for competing games gaining more traction, pre-release reviews being grim, or anything else you can think of. For Dishonored 2, the game was faced with strong competition that lowered its sales expectations.

The Dishonored series has been put on an indefinite hiatus.

(Source: TechSpot)

  • Bethesda has stated that the hiatus was brought on by the poor sales of Dishonored 2 and Death of the Outsider.
  • The hiatus has been confirmed to be indefinite.
  • Players were disappointed, but at least Death of the Outsider did not leave the series on a cliffhanger.
  • Dishonored sold 460,000 units in its first week, with Dishonored 2’s sales falling 40% below that.

And for the last section, we have some unfortunate news that was confirmed in 2018. Dishonored was put on an indefinite hiatus for the future following the poor sales of both Dishonored 2 and Death of the Outsider, which was a big hit for long-time fans of the series, but it might end up being beneficial for Bethesda since they might come back to the series in an ever better light in the future.

To sum up

That would be all we have to say about the Dishonored series. As you can see, there isn’t much information to present about it since it hasn’t been mentioned too much in gaming news in general, especially following the hiatus announcement from Bethesda. Bethesda is currently working on RedFall in full steam, so we most likely won’t see any news regarding Dishonored for the foreseeable future. Nevertheless, we and loyal fans will be on the lookout for any new information regarding the series and we’ll be sure to fill this out with anything new that comes up. Until then, we hope that you have enjoyed what we have had to say about this legendary series and that you have learned something new!
