High School DxD Season 5: Release Date, News, and Rumors

High School DxD is a series of light novels, manga, and anime and one of the most popular ongoing harem series. It follows Issei Hyodo, a student whose reputation as a pervert has made him unpopular with the ladies. Things look to be turning around when the super shy Yuma Amano asks him out on a date. Little does our plucky protagonist know, Yuma is a Fallen Angel in disguise. So it’s just his luck that their first date ends with her stabbing him in the gut.

The next day, Issei awakens completely unscathed. Confused but relieved, he passes off the previous day’s events as a dream. But life will never be the same for Issei.

After encountering another Fallen Angel, Issei is at death’s door for the second time in two days.

Again, Issei wakes up unharmed. This time, he finds himself naked in bed with the smoking hot Rias Gremory, academy idol and President of the Occult Research Club. She reveals that she is a Devil and she revived Issei to make him her servant. And so Issei finds himself thrust in the middle of a celestial war between Heaven and Hell, working to rise up the ranks in the Devil’s Army. In the process, he’ll try to fulfill his deviant dream of assembling a harem of beautiful ladies.

The Anime Adaptation

Season 4 of the anime wrapped up in 2018 and its producers were quick to announce Season 5. Passione Studio will be taking over from TNK as producers of the next arc in Issei’s tale.

One possible reason for the switch in studios is the criticisms about Seasons 3 and 4. TNK began branching out from the manga’s plot and creating their own stories. Passione Studio has made it a mission to bring the series back to its roots and stick more closely to the manga.

Even with a story that drifts from its manga original, the anime has a large fanbase. The decision to unify the two plots has also been met with some backlash. Fans of the anime claim they consider the manga and anime as separate dimensions. But manga purists dislike the confusion caused by the branching story lines. They have become invested in the characters and prefer a single canon.

Director Yoshifumi Sueda stated he already has an idea for what will be going into Season 5. The anime will continue the Hero Oppai Dragon arc from the previous season. Season 4 covered volumes 9 and 10 from the manga series, so expect Season 5 to continue with volumes 11 and 12.

When is Season 5 Coming?

Following the schedule of previous seasons, Season 5 was expected to see release in 2019. But the production studio is currently occupied with other projects, putting DxD High School Season 5 on hold for the moment. The author of the manga, Ichei Ishibumi, is also taking a break from DxD High School. Instead, he is choosing to focus on a related project, High School DxD Shin.

It’s worth noting that TNK, the studio responsible for the previous four seasons, will not be helming Season 5. The process of transitioning to a new studio must be a contributing factor in the delay. On top of that, the new production company, Passione Studio, has their hands full with other anime.

One of the projects Passione Studio has been busy with also relates to High School DxD. High School DxD Hero released in June 2018. After that, they’ve been busy with Z/X Code Reunion and Project [B.B.].

There is yet to be an official statement about the exact release date for the next season of High School DxD. But there has been a statement confirming a Season 5, so we’ll have to wait for further news. Passione Studio has a reputation for focusing on only one project at a time. So it’s safe to assume that production will start up after Passione Studio completes its other projects. Speculative dates range from late 2020 to late 2021.

What to Expect from a Season 5

Passione Studio have confirmed that Season 5 will continue with the Hero Oppai Dragon arc from the light novels.

Season 5 follows volumes 11 and 12 which close out the Hero Oppai Dragon arc of the light novels. Issei, Akeno, and Kiba are busy studying for a Promotion Test. Meanwhile, the relationship between Issei and Rias is becoming much closer than anyone expected. Azazel stirs up more trouble by bringing Ophis, leader of the Khaos Brigade, to Issei’s home.

There’s no need to worry about them running out of material. Volume 11 and 12 of the light novels released way back in 2012 and today the story is well into volumes 20 and beyond. If all goes well, we could see many more seasons of High School DxD.

The Characters We’ll Meet in Season 5

Expect to see a lot more of Azazel and Ophis in Season 5 alongside series regulars. The antagonist Cao Cao is also sure to be an important character.

Azazel is a former Fallen Angel General who served as a Chemistry Teacher at Kuoh Academy. He’s also a high-ranking advisor in the Occult Research Club. In Season 5, Azazel sets up an encounter between Issei and Ophis. He also accompanies Issei, Akeno, and Yuuto on their Mid-class Test to the Underworld where they are attacked by Cao Cao.

Ophis asks Azazel to help her meet Issei, whose massive power spike has come to her attention. Ophis plays a significant role, serving as a guide for Issei in his excursion into the Underworld.

Cao Cao

After losing in his last confrontation with Issei, Cao Cao has been biding his time in the Underworld. He acts as the main protagonist for this part of the arc, and attacks Issei and his friends during their Test.

Summing up…

We know everything about Season 5 except for the exact date of its release. Passione Studio, the studio in charge of Season 5, has confirmed a Season 5 will air. They’re currently occupied with other projects, so expect more news on this at a later date.

Season 5 will cover the final act of the Heroic Oppai Dragon arc. Azazel and Ophis will play major roles, as will Cao Cao who will serve as the big baddy for Season 5.

Barring an official statement, there’s no way of knowing when Season 5 will come out. Speculative dates for Season 5 are late 2020 to late 2021.
